Thanks to agile budget manipulation, education resources will not be cut as much as they could have been. After much negotiation and discussion (and debate) we finally get to see what was and what was not cut off from the rest of the federal budget for 2011. Pres. Obama has shown that education maintains a high priority by ensuring that Pell grants and head start programs untouched in the $ 38 billion in budget cuts.
"It would be a mistake to balance the budget by sacrificing our children's education," he said in one of his weekly radio and Internet addresses.
Although many other programs were affected by these cuts, the "priorities," said senator Tom Harkin, Iowa Democrat and Chairman of the Senate Committee on health, education, labor and pensions, were preserved. As a result of this intervention was Pres. Obama able to reverse many of the cuts passed by House Republicans in February when a cutting budget this year by more than $ 60 billion bill was approved. In doing so, the White House protected favorites like the lead early learning programme, while maintaining the maximum Pell grant from $ 5,550 and financing of Obama the "Race to the Top" initiative, a competitive grant program with incentives for States to turn around failing schools.
Dan Pfeiffer, White House Blog writes:
We protected funding for important programs in a science program, our children education and critical health investing. We maintain current levels of lead registration, Race to the Top, including an early learning element, financing and have sufficient savings available for the Pell Grant maximum award and the broad education reform agenda, including K-12 education.
Commendation must be given to Pres. Obama for putting education as a top priority in the middle of a global economic crisis.
